Vanderlei de Lima

In light of the 2016 Rio Olympics, I wanted to share the truly inspiring story of Vanderlei de Lima from Brazil. As some of you may know, during the 2004 Athens Olympics, Vanderlei de Lima was pushed off the race while he was leading in the men’s marathon. Because of this, he lost his stamina and ended up getting third place. Although, he never was sad about it. He showed great sportsmanship and accepted the bronze like it was gold.

Here is a clip that talks more about him: https://www.facebook.com/olympics/videos/10154460504554216/e3bf586c-6d07-477e-95a8-84dfefb1f814.png

He is an example of what you should do when life throws adversity at you. Instead of feeling bad about what could have happened or what didn’t happen… he was happy about what did. By being grateful for what you have and by not letting life’s downs get you down, you will be a happier person 🙂

Hope you have a wonderful Sunday! And keep smiling NO MATTER WHAT!

“A Fateful Encounter”

As I was walking to work one morning, I came across a man sitting on the concrete ground, his back leaning against the wall. He appeared to be sleeping, but only someone with an eye for perception could tell that he was very much awake. A small cardboard sign lay at his side with the words, “Will work for food” written across it. Hoping he would not notice me or attempt to ask for money, I pretended to be intrigued with the blank screen of my smart phone, walking straight past him. Later that evening, as I stopped for dinner, I noticed the same man sitting across the street. Once again, he appeared motionless, with the small make-shift sign placed next to him. Confused, I approached the man.

“Are you following me?”

No answer.

I looked around, uncertain of what to do. In all my years of living in this city, I have never been in a situation such as this. I was tempted to walk away, ignore the man, and continue to live my life as I normally do, but there was something that resisted me from doing so.

“Here,” I said, reaching into my pocket and handing him a $10 bill.

Again, the man said nothing, nor did he take the money from my hand. He looked up and I got a clear glimpse of his face. His eyes were puffy and red, his skin cracked from the bitter cold. He had a large mat of hair that covered most of his face. I looked straight into his eyes; what once must have been a bright, clear blue was now replaced by a murky, dull grey.

“Here,” I repeated. “Take it.”

“I do not want your money.” His voice took me off guard. It was low and serious, with a twinge of exhaustion. He pointed to the sign. “I will work. I want to earn it.”

“I’m sorry. I can’t help you there.” And I turned back to my apartment. But before I knew what I was doing, I found myself standing in front of the man, gazing over him once more. There was something about him. In his eyes. The passion, the need to do good. Despite the dirty looks shot at him every day, this man is not what others make him out to be. I took a deep breath. “We’re hiring some busboys at my restaurant. Be at this address tomorrow morning, 8 A.M.” I smiled. “Don’t be late on your first day.”

That man is now considered to be one of the finest chefs in America. All because someone did not judge him for what he appeared to be.

Happiness :)

Many people say that if you do what you want in life you will be happy. I truly believe that is true but apparently there was a study done which shows that happiness is a practice. You have to learn to be happy… Which is quite weird. But if you think about it… you are only happy while doing what you want because you are enjoying it… you have learned how to be happy doing it! Here is the article that talks about this very interesting view of Happiness 🙂

Stopping the worry pendulum

During hard times we all shrink or fall back a little… here is some motivation for when you go through such a thing… and remember there is always someone there for you… I am there for you!

Where is my river of life leading to?  It’s not just my river as it has got tributaries in the form of kith and kin.   All the more the fears and anxieties soar up just at the dawn looking at the newspapers.  The screaming headlines in the front pages of our newspapers are enough to put any optimist in to a worry spiral.

The mind oscillates like a pendulum to the worries of the past and anxieties of the future and therefore quite restless in the present moment.  What is the way out to stop this pendulum effect and focus on the job at hand?  Especially when we do not wish to think of something that is unfavourable, the same scene occupies the center stage in our mind.  As we are busy seeing this picture, we are also unconsciously postponing our happiness which is present right at this moment.  Just look at this:

The science of problem says ‘while, problems go backwards we go forward’

Yes, it is so!  Do a timeline check from let’s say 2000 till now.  We can easily track many negative events, – the Y2K, 9/11, the Tsunami, the financial Tsunami of 2008,  26/11 and so on. We have weathered it all and still going on to face the fall out of the Brexit!  The same timeline holds good in our personal lives too where we have won against several odds. Therefore, the science of the problem says ‘we go forward’.

Welcome to the weekstarter that gives us a tip to stop the oscillating ‘worry pendulum.’

The mirror tends to speak the
Truths that you’re too afraid to
Say out loud,
A blunt reminder of adventures lived,
Of years savored,
And of delicious moments ingested
Like fresh fruit,
Sweet and bright—
The mirror has no filter, but it’s
Most often just what we need—
Take a look and see…
Choose to see the best,
And do not fear its honesty,
But be glad that you’re alive to
Witness it.

Bumblebee

Many people may believe that you aren’t good enough… there will be a lot of people in your life who will say that.

But you just have to remember this fact: According to scientists, the bumblebee’s body is too heavy and its wing span too small. Aerodynamically, the bumblebee cannot fly. But the bumblebee doesn’t know that and it keeps flying.

When you don’t know your limitations, you go out and surprise yourself. In hindsight, you wonder if you had any limitations. The only limitations a person has are those that are self-imposed.

Even we are not aware of our capabilities.. We just have to do ourselves a favor of not to start thinking that we can’t do something… You CAN do it!

Hardships

We all have our hardships. In the moment, many of us think we are in the worst position ever….But that is not true. We are humans, humans have a way of adapting to the environment. That’s what we have been doing to get this far. We make solutions… we find out ways to get what we need. For example, communication was a huge problem before… before the technology we have now. Many times people weren’t able to get their message in time… and it would be too late. But now there are solutions to many of those problems and you too..no matter your hardship will find a solution to it 🙂 Find a solution that will help you get through what you are going through. There are no boundaries to it… just that you have to try not to think negatively about it.

Believe in yourself… you will get through it.

Here is a quote that I found on: https://www.facebook.com/powerofpositivity/photos/a.162838037370.127541.107787352370/10153256638642371/?type=3

It too talks about making the positive of a bad situation… and how in the end it’s all our choice. We can positively look for a solution for the situation or think negatively about it.
