The Greatest Weapon Against Stress

“The greatest weapon against stress is our ability to choose one thought over another.” -William James

This quote speaks volumes to me, someone who (like most people) tends to overthink every situation. Stress is inevitable for all people, but we don’t realize that the majority of our stress actually comes from ourselves. One good example comes from my experience at dance auditions. Dancers go in, learn the choreography in a short amount of time, and prepare to perform in smaller groups in front of the judges- usually all under an hour.  Though I’ve been going to these auditions for almost two years now, the nerves that come from auditioning have never completely gone away. However, the best way I overcome these nerves is simply by choosing to think positively. I don’t think about how I compare to the other dancers, nor do I panic about how well I know the choreography. These little worries that come into your mind are just distractions, big “What if”s  that are not worth stressing about.

My first year of auditioning had me asking myself these “What if” questions, leading to self-doubt as a dancer. But the second year, I told myself that I was  an amazing dancer. I told myself that even if I went on stage and fell on my face, I would do it with pointed feet and a fabulous smile on my face. I told myself that I had no reason to put extra stress on myself; all I needed to do was dance. And it worked! I had more confidence in myself, remembered the entire combination, and was even hugged by my dance teachers who were surprised by my change in energy.

It’s natural to feel stress in a high-anxiety environment. But when you boil the situation down to its core, eliminating the stress you create for yourself, you can perform much better. We have the ability to “choose one thought over another”, so in everything you do, choose the thought that brings out your positive energy!

Pictures aren’t what you’ll remember 50 years from now, memories are, so focus on making memories with the people who matter most to you.

I’ve never really been one to take lots of pictures wherever I go. My Snapchat story is almost always empty, my Facebook only has older pictures of me, and I haven’t posted any new photos on my Instagram since December. It’s not that I never go anywhere or do anything interesting; I do, but I rarely take pictures of any of it. I always forget. I like taking pictures, but it’s never the first thing I do because it’s not that important to me. I’m always so immersed in where I am and what I’m doing, so I forget to do it most of the time. Pictures are great to remember where you’ve been, but I think the best way to remember is to enjoy it to the fullest and live in the moment. Pictures can capture a lot of things, but they can’t capture fun for you to relive, so live in the moment first and have as much fun as you can before pulling out that camera.

A Golden Chain – by Helen Steiner Rice

Friendship is a Golden Chain,

The links are friends so dear,

And like a rare and precious jewel

It’s treasured more each year…

It’s clasped together firmly

With a love that’s deep and true,

And it’s rich with happy memories

and fond recollections, too…

Time can’t destroy its beauty

For, as long as memory lives,

Years can’t erase the pleasure

That the joy of friendship gives…

For friendship is a priceless gift

That can’t be bought or sold,

But to have an understanding friend

Is worth far more than gold…

And the Golden Chain of Friendship

Is a strong and blessed tie

Binding kindred hearts together

As the years go passing by.

Don’t give up!

Motivation is hard… especially when you fail a lot of times. You put in all the work you can… but then nothing comes out of it. Trust me… I have experienced this many times and that too recently. I tried out for many positions and didn’t get any of them but I am not sad.

When you try out something new, the important thing is that you tried. Trying something new is the first step to becoming successful. If you never try then how will you know if you like something or not? You may have heard from other people that something is really good and that you should do/try it. But until you do it for yourself you will never know. This reminds me of this quote:

“You will never know if you never try”

This quote resonates with me often, and that is why I try to try out new things in life. Don’t be afraid to try new things and keep your mind open to new possibilities. If something isn’t working out for you, maybe it wasn’t meant it be… maybe it’s life’s way of telling you to move on and try something else. It’s never the end of the world if you don’t get something you really wanted your entire life… maybe there is something out there that is way better for you!

Here is a really inspirational story I found circling then internet and I wanted to share it with all of you! I am not sure who this story really belongs to but it’s about Jack Ma.

Goodnight

Like clouds on the sky

Floating as they fly.

The gentle sunshine from east to west

We wait, as the sun decides to set.

The night awaits you,

The deep, dark blue.

Oh, my darling, my sweet.

Bundled in thick warm fleece.

May no bad dreams awake you.

And may He protect you.

Goodnight, my dear.

Until the morning cheer.

Story: Getting enough sleep isn’t impossible. Enjoy your rest!

It’s not impossible! I promise you, getting at least 8 hours of sleep every night is not impossible.

I realize that everyone has busy schedules, so it is hard to finish everything you have to do in order to get an appropriate amount of sleep. Procrastination gets us all. It is hard to go through an entire day of school where all we do is focus on our work, only to come home to do exactly the same thing. Taking a break and watching a movie may seem tempting, but it is important that we find the self control to finish everything we need to do.

I have always been a person who values my sleep, right from a young age. I place limits on myself so others do not have to tell me to go to bed or start working on my homework. By doing so, I have been able to get the right amount of sleep for me.

My friends are not one to value sleep as much as they should, and it worries me to see them exhausted and unenthusiastic the following day. There are always people who worry about you, wanting to make sure you get the proper rest you need. We do too! Please go and enjoy your rest!

Challenge: Get at least 8 hours of sleep every night.

Taking time to rest has its benefits. Not only does it improve your mood by making you more energetic, it helps you do better in school and sports.  🙂 Head to bed!
